Ads about Atlantic City but pensions are the issue

TRENTON >> New Jersey voters in two competitive legislative races have been bombarded with television commercials about the plight of Atlantic City casinos. But the group bankrolling the ads is actually sending a message about public employee pensions.

The political arm of the state’s largest teacher’s union, the New Jersey Education Association, has contributed nearly $3 million to a super political action committee whose mission is electing Democrats.

General Majority PAC has spent about $2 million ahead of the Nov. 3 election. Money has gone toward ads in southern New Jersey’s 1st and 2nd Districts to portray Democrats as strongly opposed to casinos in the northern part of the state.

The NJEA says it is spending money to help elect candidates who supported making a full pension payment.
